Tailored Look
My main focus of this coat is asymmetry and sleek lines. The idea that your eye can spiral down well looking at this coat. My professor really helped me focus on the placement of the flowers and how to use them to deliver a message to the eye. I enjoyed every moment of making this coat. It was so rewarding to see the finished product and came together like magic.

Bridal
In the beginning I did not set out to create a modest gown. As I was finishing up sewing this look I knew I wanted Z to model it for me. It was just a feeling in my gut that she was the one who was meant to wear it. However, it came with a set of challenges. How do I make it modest? I think that most design houses are intimidated by the idea of creating modest looks. Which leads to lack of diversity not only on the runway but In our magazines, in stores, and in clothing options for hijab wearing women. When I told my professor that I would need to create a hijab and body suit to be worn under the dress and bodice he gave me a funny look. A look that I knew meant “why are you putting extra work on yourself at this point in the semester?” But that’s the exact problem with the fashion industry. I learned throughout this process that it’s not a challenge and it’s not “extra work”. This look took about 30 hours of hand beading and is completed with 4 pieces that make up the assembled garment.

Conceptual Couture
My concept for this piece came to me very fast. I’ve always had a real fascination with death. My mother named me after Jackie Kennedy (or so she claims) and I would always be fascinated with the death of JFK and the relationship she has with her husband and Marilyn Monroe. This piece is about funeral attire and the different stages of mourning in the 1800’s. It was very important to me that I create a veil to protect the emotions of the wearer. Black moire fabric and black velvet fabric have different textures and shines that would represent how different fabrics are used in 1800’s mourning wear.

Camp Couture
This look was my final look that I created for the semester. I was out of steam. This look is something that I think really defines my style and aesthetic. Sleek and simple lines with fine detail in beading. I ordered the fabric because I loved it and had NO clue what I was going to do with it. Half way through making it friends started telling me how much it reminded them of Game of Thrones. I immediately saw it and now can’t look at it without thinking of Sansa Stark. Strong and powerful women tend to always be my inspiration for the pieces that I create.
